Topographic Surveys

Topographic Surveys involve the collection of features affecting a parcel. These features are drafted on a map or plan and can be illustrated in a number of different ways. These types of surveys are often prepared for the below reasons:

  • Architectural Design

  • Engineering Design (Roads, Utilities, Drainage, etc.)

  • Permit Applications

  • Volume Calculations

  • Land-use Planning


Residential Services

These types of surveys are often requested by property owners looking to improve upon their land, or by parties involved in real estate transactions. Examples of these types of surveys may include:

  • Infill Developments

  • Real Property Reports (RPR)

  • Plot/Site Plans for building permit applications

  • Property line marking for fence installations

  • Stakeouts for new construction

  • Lot Grading Certificates

Canada Land Surveys

In order to survey on Canada Lands a surveyor must be licensed as a Canada Lands Surveyor. These types of surveys are typically performed on:

  • Reserves

  • National Parks

Construction Surveys

These types of surveys can vary greatly in their scope. They are often requested by contractors to assist with the efficient execution of a project. Some examples of this may include:

  • Road Construction Layout

  • Site Plans for Design

  • Elevation benchmarks

  • Pile and foundation layout

  • Excavation limits

  • As-constructed surveys

Crown Land Disposition

Surveys on crowns land must often be register with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) or Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP). The are too many types of surveys that fall under this category to list them all. But the more common types are:

  • LOC/DLO Surveys for Access

  • MSL/DMS for Lease sites

  • PLA/DPL for Pipelines

  • EZE for easements

  • SME/SML for Gravel pits


Legal Surveys

These types of surveys must always be completed by qualified Alberta Land Surveyors, and are often registered with the Alberta Land Titles Office. Some examples include:

  • Subdivisions

  • Consolidations

  • Descriptive Plans

  • Condominiums Conversions

  • Bareland Condominiums

  • Rights of ways, Easements

  • Road Surveys, and Road Widening

  • Monument plans to re-establish missing property pins
